MJ Cardwell
fiction author
MJ Cardwell was raised in a large family of readers. She has read a slew of books from many genres and authors. With her love of books, it’s not surprising she’d become an author.
Watching people and making up stories as they pass by has always been a fun pastime for her. MJ’s writing is a culmination of her life experiences and of the people around her.
In addition to poems and short stories, she has written novels in the literary fiction genre. Her hobbies include gaming, painting and music.
MJ is married and living in Virginia with her husband, three Chihuahua’s and an overactive hound-mix puppy.
A closer look
I started writing over a decade ago. I wrote for the enjoyment of storytelling in creative forums and an online ezines.
What originally started as a short, fan fiction story, became a novel. I enjoyed the protagonist so much, I kept writing and developing a story about her. The fan fiction fizzled away and my first novel was written.
Writing that novel made me realize how difficult it can be to bring a story to fruition. I love to research so that was actually fun for me. The hard part was the edits. All the edits and rewrites.
Once I felt I had a finished and had a somewhat polished manuscript, I began sending off queries. It was rare then to have any agent accept an email submission. I had to mail a letter and wait months for an answer and it was usually a kind form letter rejection. Then I would query again. After a couple years of this, I became disheartened and went the route of self-publishing.
This was when self-publishing had not taken off and was frowned upon. A couple years later, I wrote and self published a second novel. It several more years for me to slowly realize that doing all the publishing, edits, formatting, graphic design and such only took me away from actual writing. Writing is what I enjoy doing, not all the other aspects of the publishing machine.
Today I have written my third novel and have grown as an author and become well-educated with the industry. I will tenaciously query agents and continue to improve my writing, my craft.
I look forward to having my first professionally published novel being read by many.
Thanks for reading my “other” bio,
MJ
